One thing that people will need to know is that this certification is not a national requirement.  One does not need it to start work as a pharmacy tech.  However, many employers want their staff to have this credential.  In fact, some employers will not interview clients who don’t have it.  So it is to your benefit as a job candidate to have this credential so you can stand out from other applicants and keep your options open.

A second thing that you will want to know is that many pharmacies will actually reimburse you for the cost of the certification.  This is not a large cost as its $200 or less but it is something everyone should remember when they start working as it does not hurt to ask them.  After all, many people will already be having to pay for the cost of the underlying training.

A third thing to keep in mind is that the exam is based on the learning of the training.  Therefore, you will want to get some training to put you in the best position possible to pass the certification exam.  It also does not hurt that this training also focuses on what most will actually be doing in their job so it turns out the training and certification end up being very practical too.

A fourth thing to think about is getting this credential is that it is effective for 2 years.  To keep the credential current, you will need to take some continuing education courses every 2 years to keep the certification up to date.  This is not unlike many other licenses and certifications and ensures you stay up to date on changes that are occurring.

The Argument Against Becoming A Certified Pharmacy Technician

August 31st, 2011

Although we recommend that people become a certified pharmacy technician because of the value of the training received, there is an argument for considering skipping it.  This is made possible because there is no national requirement that one being certified to work as a pharmacy technician.  Here, we take a look at several reasons why one might not want to get this certification.

One of the first reasons you might decide to not get the training is the time commitment.  Most training programs will require you to spend several months up to a year to get trained.  Some people simply do not have the time to get in this training and would rather start working instead of training.  Obviously, one could get a jump on their career to the tune of up to 1 year by avoiding the training.

A second reason you might want to avoid the training is the cost issue.  Although the cost is not too expensive as most programs are around $1,000, it is still a cost.  Some may simply not have the money to set aside for this training and have little choice but to avoid it as its not a requirement.  They may also feel they can get this training at a later point in time too.

A third reason you may decide to avoid the training is that you do not need it to get the first job.  Some will feel they can get the first job they want without any training or certification.  They can instead get started right away and avoid delaying their career with any training.  Those who are fast learners may not need the safety net that the training programs provide.  Instead, they are less likely to make as many mistakes than others and can do fine without the training as they get through the learning process at the first job.

A fourth reason  you could avoid this training is you may feel you can spend your time and money doing something else that is better for your career in contrast.  This could be some public speaking courses or other training that you feel would be a better benefit to your overall career.  Of course, this would depend on your own skill set and potential deficiencies you need work on.

By keeping these different things in mind, you should be able to see why some choose to avoid becoming a certified pharmacy technician.  We still believe this is not the best course of action for most people, but these are the arguments against getting this training and certification.

Should You Get A Pharmacy Technician Certification?

August 27th, 2011

Many people must make the decision each year on whether getting a pharmacy technician certification is right for them.  Surprisingly, this credential is not a requirement to becoming a pharmacy tech.  This reality has led many to openly wonder whether it is worth their while to go through the training and become certified.  Here, we take a closer look at this issue by looking at several different factors you should consider.

One factor that you should be asking yourself is whether you will need this credential to get your first job.  This credential can help open the doors to more job offerings as some pharmacies will only interview those with this training and credential.  Therefore, if you want to work for these employers, you will need to get this credential.

A second thing to consider is whether you believe you will be working long term with that first employer.  If you will, you may want this credential to ensure you get a higher starting salary as people with these credentials can often command slightly higher starting pay.  Also, even if you think you will leave the company in a couple of years, your new salary with the other company will often be limited by what your salary range was at this first job.  Therefore, it is often a good idea to get the credential to get your salary up as high as it can be to help you throughout your career.

A third thing to think about is how fast of a learner are you.  If you are one that is not the faster learner or who struggles with stress and making mistakes, you will benefit from going through the training and certification process.  The reason is that you will get to learn in an environment that is conducive to learning and not as negatively critical of your mistakes as an employer could be.  The result is that you can make your mistakes in the training process when they don’t matter and start your first job with far more confidence and far less mistakes.

A fourth thing you should think about is the time issue.  The time needed to take this training and certification can be a significant commitment.  One must make sure they have the time to allocate to this process to get the most out of it.  You should expect this process to go from several months up to a year depending on the program.  Fortunately, you can take online classes which can make it easier for some to fit these classes into their schedule as you can take them at anytime.  However, one should still recognize there is a time commitment involved.

By keeping all these different things in mind, you should be better able to decide if a Pharmacy Technician Certification is right for you.

How To Find Good Pharmacy Technician Schools

August 25th, 2011

Many people decide that they need to get some pharmacy technician training but are unsure how to find the quality pharmacy technician schools.  This is a fair question because one can become inundated with many options and wonder how best to sort through them to find the best option for them.  Here, we take a look at this issue by providing you with a list of tips that you can use to find the good ones.

One of the first things you will want to do is make a list of the schools you are considering.  This list can be filled by looking at what schools you find on the Internet and based on any recommendations you here.  All that is needed to find these schools online is to do a simple Internet keyword search.

At this point, you should have a pretty thorough list of possible candidates.  What you will want to do now is start to look at each company’s website to see how credible the company is.  Ideally, you want to find companies that have a website that is put together well and has a long history of providing this training.  We suggest you avoid any programs that are new or only have a couple of years experience as they do not have as much of a track record to consider.  Once you have narrowed down your list this way, you can go to the next step.

This step involves finding out what students have to say about each of these programs.  You can first start by looking at the program’s website and reading their customer testimonials.  However, you should recognize that these may not be a good representation of the service.  To find out the answer to this, you will need to find less biased reviews.  These can be found on neutral sites like message boards, forums, and blogs.  This provides great power on the Internet as people can instantly give their opinions on the level of service they received on a range of services and products including pharmacy technician schools.  To find these, you simply do a search by the name of the school and one of the words “message boards”, “forums” or “blog”.  This helps give you a list of comments made by users.  From these, you should be able to tell what people really think about this program.  Although no one negative review should be given too much weight, you should be able to recognize patterns.

After you have completed this customer reviews step, you will want to look at the remaining programs to see which ones might be a good fit for your needs in terms of budget, class offerings, etc.  Only you can decide which options here will be important to you but you should give some thought to how much you are willing to spend for the training and whether you prefer online courses or classroom options in your area.

By using all these different points, you can do a good job at a narrowing your list down to the best pharmacy technician schools.
